Privacy notice
How Thumela handles the personal information you give us when you join the launch list.
This notice covers the launch waitlist on this website. It will be extended before the Thumela service itself opens.
Who we are
Thumela Online (Pty) Ltd, a company registered in South Africa, is the responsible party for the personal information described here. Contact us at privacy@thumela.co.za.
What we collect
When you join the launch list we record:
- your email address;
- the page you signed up from (the “source”, such as the home page);
- the IP address the signup came from;
- the version of the consent text you agreed to;
- the timestamps of your signup, confirmation and, if you use it, removal.
We do not collect your name, and we do not set cookies or run analytics on this site.
Why we collect it
There is one purpose: to tell you when Thumela launches. The IP address and consent version exist so we can show that a signup was genuine and what you agreed to, and to slow down automated abuse of the form.
Lawful basis
We process this information with your consent, under section 11(1)(a) of the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA). You give that consent by submitting the form and confirming your address from the email we send. You may withdraw it at any time by using the remove link.
Where it is stored, and how
Your email address is encrypted before it is written to our database, and the database runs in South Africa. It is not transferred outside South Africa for storage. See the data residency statement.
How long we keep it
- If you confirm your address, we keep it until Thumela launches and the launch email has been sent, or until you remove yourself.
- If you remove yourself, the row is marked removed and purged within 30 days.
- Signups that are never confirmed may be purged without notice.
Your rights
Every email we send you carries a link to remove yourself from the list; using it needs no login and no explanation. You may also ask us to confirm what we hold about you, correct it or delete it by writing to privacy@thumela.co.za. If you are not satisfied with our response you may complain to the Information Regulator (South Africa).
Sub-processors
Emails to you are sent through Amazon Web Services, Simple Email Service, in the af-south-1 (Cape Town) region. AWS receives your email address for the purpose of delivering the message and nothing else. We use no other sub-processor for the waitlist.
Changes
If this notice changes in substance we will publish the new version here with a new consent version, and rely on the version you agreed to for anything collected before that date.
